Motor Truck Cargo Insurance

Motor truck cargo insurance covers the freight you are hauling for someone else if it is damaged, stolen or lost while in your care. FMCSA does not require it for general freight, but nearly every broker, shipper and load board does, which makes it the second policy every for-hire carrier buys. Our agency places it alongside primary liability from a licensed office in Las Vegas.

What drives your rate

  • Commodity: general freight, refrigerated, electronics, auto parts and building materials rate differently.
  • Limit: is common; some shippers require or more.
  • Deductible.
  • Radius and whether loads are ever left unattended overnight.
  • Loss history.
  • Reefer breakdown coverage if you haul refrigerated freight.

How it works

  1. Step 1: Tell us what you haul and who you haul for

Bring the broker's insurance requirements if you have them.

  2. Step 2: We quote the limit and endorsements the contract needs

Including reefer breakdown or theft coverage where the commodity calls for it.

  3. Step 3: Bind and issue certificates

Certificates go to your brokers as soon as we bind.

Questions carriers ask

Is cargo insurance required by FMCSA?

For general freight, no. FMCSA cargo filings apply to household goods movers and freight forwarders. For everyone else it is a contract requirement from brokers and shippers.

What does motor truck cargo not cover?

Common exclusions are theft from an unattended vehicle, freight left in a trailer overnight without a listed secured lot, refrigeration breakdown, and certain commodities such as tobacco, alcohol and electronics unless specifically added. Read the exclusions before you take the load.

Do I need cargo insurance if I only haul dirt or aggregate?

Usually not by contract either, but some contractors and municipalities require it. Check the contract's insurance section.
