Owner-Operator Truck Insurance

Owner-operator truck insurance comes in two shapes. Under your own authority you carry primary liability with a federal filing, cargo, and physical damage. Leased on to a motor carrier you carry non-trucking liability and physical damage while the carrier's policy covers you under dispatch. Our agency writes single truck operations and small fleets in both structures from a licensed office in Las Vegas.

What drives your rate

  • Own authority versus leased on: this decides which policies you need at all.
  • Years your authority has been active and your inspection record.
  • Driving record and CDL experience.
  • Truck type: tractor, dump truck or box truck.
  • Radius and commodity.
  • Truck and trailer values.
  • Garaging ZIP.

How it works

  1. Step 1: Tell us how you run

Own authority or leased on, truck type, USDOT number.

  2. Step 2: We structure the policies to match

No paying for coverage your structure does not need.

  3. Step 3: Bind and file

Filings submitted with the policy. Certificates issued to your broker or motor carrier.

This program is for owner-operators of truck tractors, dump trucks and box trucks running for hire.

Questions carriers ask

Does one truck cost more to insure than a fleet per truck?

Often yes, because a single truck has no fleet credit and the driver is usually the owner. Carriers rate the operation, the driver and the equipment; the count matters less than those three.

If I lease on, do I still need my own insurance?

Usually two policies: non-trucking liability for personal use of the tractor and physical damage on the truck itself. The motor carrier's liability covers you under dispatch. Read the lease; it will say what you must carry.

Can I move from leased on to my own authority mid-term?

Yes. The leased-on policies are replaced by a primary liability policy with a federal filing and cargo. Tell us before you file for authority so the filing and the activation date line up.
